Michelle Collado is a first-generation Dominican multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts. She received her B.F.A. in Film/Animation/Video at the Rhode Island School of Design. She specializes in oil painting but also makes work as a filmmaker, muralist and stop motion animator.
Michelle’s work explores the nuances of culture, Identity, and time while centering the lives of marginalized people. In her work she paints portraits of people oftentimes in response to the effects of postcolonial capitalism while also depicting the livelihoods of marginalized people. She uses vibrant colors to intensify the reality and space in which her subjects are placed and utilizes both surrealism and realism to reflect the message of what she is portraying. Collado believes in the importance of community building which led her to gravitate to portraiture and figurative work.
Collado has recently exhibited her work in MassArt in Bostan and Le Poincoin in Paris, France. She is currently a Creative Producer at the social justice and art nonprofit, “Elevated Thought”.
